Three days of darkness

The 'three days of darkness' refers to a future cataclysmic event whereby the Earth and mankind will go through a major upheaval over a period of 72 hours or three days and nights; a global disaster that will end the third world war and wipe out a large part of humanity. Afterwards, a long period of peace will follow. Civilization will be thrown back in time (a hundred years), the survivors will rebuild culture slowly.

The three days of darkness appear in a myriad of prophecies by numerous sources over the centuries as a decisive global event for mankind whereby hundreds of millions of people will die. In contemporary terminology it would be formulated as a world-scale disaster, triggered by a non-human cosmic cause. In religious terminology it is the divine wrath and cleansing and "the punishment will be the most terrible ever known in the history of mankind".

- three days of darkness are also mentioned in the Old Testament as the ninth plague of Egypt (see excerpt of Book of Exodus below)
- the 'three days of darkness' should not be confounded with the final or last judgement, though topics of wrath and judgement flow into one another (see eg excerpt from Book of the prophet Zephaniah below and/or the medieval latin poem Dies Irae so often put to music as part of the Requiem mass).

Schema FMC00.449 is imaginative evocation imagery related to transition between the old and the new.

Farmers consciously burn the fields to make these fertile again after a harvest. They destroy what was before because it needs to be done out of necessity, preparing for the next thing to come and knowing it takes time to recover.

Transition periods also happen between evolutionary phases in the development of humanity:

One example is the disruption after the separation of Moon (as illustrated on Schema FMC00.362 on Planets hosting beings at various stages of evolution).
Another example is the approx. 1000 years it took after the fall of the roman empire (approx. 4th century AD) to reach again a similar level of civilization (starting again 14th century). Exoterically, history may call this a dark period of the middle ages, as if nothing much of interest happened. Overview

In terms of surveying available sources, Stephan Berndt (see Further reading section below) provides an overview table with 30 source references to the three days of darkness, plus 27 additional references that are less specific but also describe or point to a similar darkness and disaster for humanity. Although the most complete, the listing may not even be exhaustive.

Berndt qualifies the sources in terms of length of the statements, a quality assessment or indicator, and the various shared characteristics of the descriptions (lightning, earthquake(s), tidal waves, what to do or not do, ..), and also looks at timing and origin of the sources, most of them 19 and 20th century and mostly central European or German. Interestingly, of the 30 main references, 15 mention the great war, 11 mention earthquake(s), and 10 consistently state to not leave one's house

The selected references below are a limited sample of the many sources available. Included are 'simple' clairvoyant men' such as Stormberger and especially Irlmaier, as well as four women with stigmata.

In Ch 16 on 'The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath' we find the below. Rudolf Steiner maps this to the next astral Condition of Form, see Schema FMC00.258 on Book of Revelation. Still the description shows similarity as a cosmic disaster at the scale of the Earth.

Matthias Stormberger or 'Mühlhiasl of Apoig' (1753-1805) (DE)

Stormberger was a German peasant mystic, Mühlhiasl was a legendary Bavarian cowherd and seer, historians are uncertain as to whether they are the same, but the likelihood is quite high and hence they are often mentioned together or as one.

And after the end of the Second Great War, a third universal conflagration will come, so that it will determine everything. There will be weapons totally new. In one day, more men will die than in all the previous wars. The battles will be accomplished with artificial weapons. Gigantic catastrophes will happen. With the open eyes, the nations of the planet will go through these catastrophes. They won't know what is happening, and those that know and tell, will be silenced. Everything will be different from before, and in many places the Earth will be a great cemetery. The third war will be the end of many nations".

There will come three days of continuous darkness. The blessed candle of wax alone will give light during the horrid darkness. One candle will last for three days, but in houses of the Godless they will not give light. During those three days the demons will appear in abominable and horrible forms, they will make the air resound with shocking blasphemies. The lightning will penetrate the homes, but will not extinguish the light of the blessed candles; neither wind nor storm nor earthquake will extinguish it.

1944 - Beinsa Douno

The closest correlation in context of the 'Three days of darkness' may be in the quote below, but it remains interpretation. Its correlation comes from the use of the word purifying cosmic fire, as the word rains of fire is also used in other predictions.

[2 - wave of purifying divine fire]
A few decades will pass before this Fire arrives, and this will transform the world by bringing a new morality. This immense wave comes from outer space and will flood the whole Earth. All those who oppose it will be wiped out and transferred elsewhere. Even if the inhabitants of this planet are not all in the same degree of evolution, the new wave will be perceived by everyone. And this transformation will not only affect the Earth but the whole of the entire Cosmos.

gave an long and detailed description of a future great war between east and west, and as part of this vision the following extract

It will become dark one day during the year .. then a huge thunderstorm will appear with bolts of lightning and thunder and an earthquake will move the Earth. Do not go out of the house. No lights will burn except for candle lights. The stream of people stops. Whoever inhales the dust will develop cramps and die. Do not open the windows. Hand the windows with black paper on the glass. All open water will become poisonous, and all open food which has not been canned. Also all foods in glass will not make it....Outside, the dust moves. Many people will die. After seventy-two hours everything will be over. But I will say it you again, do not go outside, do not look out of the window. Let the candles burn, keep watch, and pray. Overnight more people will die than in the combined two world wars.

Jesus does not want us to behold the anger of God, because God's anger must be contemplated with fear and trembling. Those who disregard this advice will be killed instantly.
The wind will carry with it poisonous gases which will be diffused over the entire Earth. Those who suffer and die innocently will be Martyrs and they will be with Me in My Kingdom.
Satan will triumph! But after three nights the earthquakes and fire will cease. On the following day the sun will shine again. Angels will descend from Heaven and will spread the spirit of peace over the Earth. No one shall leave the house or look out a window from that moment on. I Myself shall come amidst the thunder and lightening. The wicked shall behold my Divine Heart. Those who fight for my cause shall receive grace from my divine heart; and the cry, “Who is like unto God?” shall serve as a means of protection for many. However many shall burn in the open fields like withered grass. The godless shall be annihilated, so that afterwards the just shall be able to stand afresh.

The darkness shall last a day and a night, followed by another day and a night, and another day – but on the night following, the stars will shine again, and on the next morning the sun shall rise again, and it will be spring time!

At the return of light, let everyone give thanks to the Holy Trinity for their protection! The devastation shall be very great!

In the days that preceded the Deluge, people didn't expect anything until the arrival of the flood which carried them off. But today you have been warned, you are living in times of which I said:
On this Earth there will be disasters of all kinds: iniquity is the cause of misery and famine, nations will be in anguish, there will be portents and phenomena in heaven and on earth. So, be ready because great tribulations is near, such as has never been seen since the beginning of the world until today, and which will never be again.

I tell you, this young generation will not pass before all this happens.

That night I awoke from a sound sleep and sat up in my bed. I was living in a small rented room over a storefront across the street from Michigan State University, and there were people coming and going at all hours. I figured a noise in the hall had awakened me, but I could hear nothing.
Then, in the air a few feet in front of me, a globe materialized, slowly spinning, the size of a beach ball. I immediately recognized it as the Earth, as seen from space. The blue oceans, green and brown land masses, and white patterns of clouds and storms. It was both real and not-real: like a hologram projected into the air.
As I watched, the land masses began to darken at various points. Small black pustules formed, like little blisters or cancers on the Earth. The blue of the oceans became brown and muddy around these areas. The cancers slowly expanded, blackening the Earth and cracking it in places, until they covered virtually all the land of the planet. The clouds turned a death-like yellow-gray, and the waters no longer sparkled blue but were a dull and putrid green-brown.
A thought came into my mind as if a voice were speaking to me: "The Earth is a living thing. It is infected."
Then the Earth shuddered as it spun. It jerked to one side, as if the spin were changing, and the blackened areas split open. The Earth shuddered again, and the black areas cracked and shattered into fragments, falling off into the air around the image and vanishing. The Earth was once again clear and clean, spinning gracefully, displaying oceans the color of lapis lazuli and land richly covered with green.
The voice in my mind said, "The Earth has healed itself."
The image vanished and I lay back in my bed, realizing that the infection in my vision was humankind; the Earth was as much a living organism as I was, a single and complete entity in its own right, perhaps even with its own unique consciousness, and it would respond to a toxic infection by throwing it off, as my body would shed a bacterial invasion or a scab.
I couldn’t sleep, so I pulled out a Bible from the stack of books next to my bed. I flipped it open to a random page toward the end, and my eyes looked down at the words of the Book of Revelation (11:18): ". . . and I shall destroy them which destroy the Earth."
Stunned, I closed the Bible and put it on the bookshelf as if it were hot. I slept fitfully the rest of that night, knowing intuitively that every major change - be it in the world or in individual human life - was preceded by signs and markers. There are always warnings, and I’d just seen, heard, and felt a vivid one.

Note [1] - Third secret of Fatima

In Fatima, Portugal, three children claimed to have been visited by the Virgin Mary six times between May and October 1917. On 13 July 1917 supposedly three secrets were entrusted to the children. Two of these were revealed by the Roman Catholic Church in 1941. Whereas there was hesitation on behalf of the children to reveal the third secret, a Bishop 'ordered' to put it in writing in 1943. It has been kept in a closed envelope 'not to be opened before 1960'.

Since then, speculation abounds around this Third secret, as the Vatican has not necessarily released the true or complete contents in June 2000.

In a 1980 interview for the German magazine 'Stimme des Glaubens' published in October 1981, John Paul II was asked explicitly to speak about the third secret. He said:

"Because of the seriousness of its contents, in order not to encourage the world wide power of communism to carry out certain coups, my predecessors in the chair of Peter have diplomatically preferred to withhold its publication.
On the other hand, it should be sufficient for all Christians to know this much: if there is a message in which it is said that the oceans will flood entire sections of the earth; that, from one moment to the other, millions of people will perish... there is no longer any point in really wanting to publish this secret message.
Many want to know merely out of curiosity, or because of their taste for sensationalism, but they forget that 'to know' implies for them a responsibility. It is dangerous to want to satisfy one's curiosity only, if one is convinced that we can do nothing against a catastrophe that has been predicted."
He held up his rosary and stated
"Here is the remedy against this evil. Pray, pray and ask for nothing else. Put everything in the hands of the Mother of God."
Asked what would happen in the Church, he said:
"We must be prepared to undergo great trials in the not-too-distant future; trials that will require us to be ready to give up even our lives, and a total gift of self to Christ and for Christ. Through your prayers and mine, it is possible to alleviate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert it, because it is only in this way that the Church can be effectively renewed. How many times, indeed, has the renewal of the Church been effected in blood? This time, again, it will not be otherwise. We must be strong, ... we must entrust ourselves to Christ and to His holy Mother, and we must be attentive, very attentive, to the prayer of the Rosary."
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger denied that John Paul II made these remarks during the 26 June 2000 press conference that saw the publication of the third secret.

Ratzinger have his own commentary to the third prophecy along with its communication by the Church. It is interesting to note that the above is not at all contradictory with the contents of this page, quite on the contrary.

Note [2] - Commentary

Irlmaier and other sources are consistent in placing the three days of darkness in the future great world war. Further study of the sources also mention famine and complete desolation, as well as the fact that afterwards a time of happyness will come, but also that civilisation will be thrown back for a hundred years. The statements by Nostradamus, Beinsa Douno, Irlmaier and others are remarkably consistent.
